Council committed to Pounds 80

COUNCIL bosses insist they are committed to the eagerlyawaited plans for an Pounds 80 million overhaul of Neath town centre.

The Post reported on Tuesday that traders are concerned about a lack of information about how plans rado watches for redeveloping the town are progressing.

That night a statement was given to the chamber of trade from Gareth Nutt, the council's head of regeneration.

He said: "The council continues, along with Simons Developments, to make preparations for taking advantage of any opportunities that may exist when the economic position improves in relation to the redevelopment of the retail led proposals."

"This is a sign of confidence in the town and complements the council's vision to develop Neath into a modern market town with an excellent range of leisure and retail opportunities," said Mr Nutt.

The huge redevelopment of the town centre was first announced in November 2007.

Mr Nutt's statement was released to the Post the day after town centre manager Terry Harvey read it out at a meeting of Neath Chamber of Trade.

Speaking at the meeting, Keith Harding, president of the group, said customers were often asking him what was happening with the plans. "It is frustrating," said Mr Harding.
