Raj blood banks to go online

To connect all the 83 blood banks in the state, through an online system, the health department has sent a demand of Rs1.66 crore to the finance department to be able to complete the project.

According to the officials, a total budget of Rs2.66 crore was prepared to connect 83 blood banks across the state in which 45 are run by the health department, four are owned by Union government-run hospitals and remaining are private.

"We have sent the file to the finance department for budget approval. We hope to get the nod for budget of Rs1.66 crore very soon," OP Gupta director (public health) said.

According to officials, a total budget of Rs2.66 crore was prepared for this project in which Rs50 lakh each would be contributed by the Rajasthan Aids Control Society and National Rural Health Mission while the remaining would be borne by the health department.

"The technology is easily available but it is not clear when people can expect this facility as the government process is definitely going to take its time," a source in health department said.

The state health minister AA Khan had announced connecting the blood banks online after a series of complaints, of illegal blood sale and blood trade through professional blood donor, was received from various parts of the state.

Particularly the Hindaun incident had hastened this ambitious announcement by the health minister.

"The aim of the project was to monitor the blood availability at the blood banks on a continuous basis to ensure better management of emergency situation. The project also included installation of bio-metric system for the blood donors to identify the professional ones," an official said.
