Backgrounder: Basic facts about Kyrgyzstan

BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Kyrgyzs Sunday started voting in a referendum on a new constitution which would replace the country's presidential system with a parliamentary democracy.

The following are some basic facts about Kyrgyzstan.

Kyrgyzstan, which covers an area of 198,500 square km, is a mountainous landlocked country in Central Asia, borderded by Kazakhstan to the north, Sexy Costumes Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the south and China to the southeast.

Among its population of 5.3 million, consisting of over 80 ethnic groups, nearly 70 percent are Kyrgyzs. The Kyrgyz language is the state language and Russian is the official language.

The country's capital, Bishkek, lies at the center of the Chu River basin. The Chu River valley, a shortcut connecting the Central Asian steppe with China's northwestern desert, was part of the ancient Silk Road.

Kyrgyzstan is rich in natural resources. Its antimony output ranks third in the world. In the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the country's production of tin and mercury ranks second and hydropower resources rank third. Agriculture is the country's leading economic sector and the main products include wheat, beet, corn and tabacco.

Kyrgyzstan passed its first constitution in May 1993 after the collapse of the then Soviet Union. An amendment to the constitution, approved by a national referendum in 2003, provides that the president has a five-year term and is only allowed to be reelected once.

The opposition had formed an interim government and announced a new draft constitution designed to restrict the president's powers.
