The National Institute of Design (NID) will organise its first International Film Festival in February 2011 with an aim to foster the Sino-Indian relationship and bring a better understanding between the neighbouring countries.

The film and video festival called Alpavirama 2011 will accept entries from South Asia. Around 30 short films with a running time of more than 3 minutes and less than 30 minutes will be selected for the competition.

The selected films will be screened at the festival. The participants need to be less than Women's pumps 30-years old. Talking about Alpavirama 2011, faculty and coordinator of Film and Video Communication at NID Arun Gupta said, "China and India are going to be the most important countries of the world in the near future.

Keeping this in view, we are taking the opportunity of the first film festival of NID to take a step towards improving the relationship between the two countries."

He said the festival will enable us to understand better the neighbouring countries and their film making. A section of the film festival called 'Special Package' will present around 15 to 20 short films from Hong Kong. "We have chosen Hong Kong because it is a part of China which has a very interesting culture. The fast pace of China's growth in recent years have left several old international hegemonies panting behind," Gupta said.

He said Hong Kong, as China's symbolic entranceway, is a city undergoing intricate and provocative change, with its mixture of communism and capitalism, vertical and horizontal, expatriate and local, Cantonese and Mandarin.

"It would thus be very interesting to understand how the young Hong Kong filmmakers, living amid these complex shifts, record and interpret life around them," he said.

The festival will also invite some of the young filmmakers from Hong Kong, whose works feature in the package. Apart from the short film and video competition and the special package of short films from Hong Kong, Alpavirama 2011 will also showcase selected short films by the students and alumnus of the department of Film and Video Communication of the institute.

"These will include selected short fiction and documentary films that were made by our students as part of their regular course structure during the last 20 years since the department was set up.

A DVD of the selection will also be simultaneously released," he said. " Alumni whose works feature in the retrospective will be encouraged to be present during the festival, to lead the pre and post-screening dialogue," he said.

The festival will also hold seminars that will discuss various topics of short film and video including the changing pattern of filmmaking with the emergence of cheaper technologies like mobile phones, new applications of films like using film as art installations etc.

GHARIB: Good evening, everyone. Worries about global growth slammed Wall Street and investors around the globe today. And Tom, here in the U.S., stocks fell sharply after a steep drop in consumer confidence as well as new concerns about one of the world`s biggest growth stories -- China.

HUDSON: Yeah, Susie, the selling really was steep here in America. At the bell, the Dow was off 268 points. The NASDAQ fell 85 and you can see the S&P lost 33 points closing at a new low for the year. All the selling here really coming on a spike in volume, 1.6 billion shares trading hands on the big board, 2.7 billion was the pace of trading on the NASDAQ.

GHARIB: And Tom, investors were also nervous about some developments in Europe. A further drop in the euro and labor strikes in Greece and Spain, protesting austerity measures.

HUDSON: One thing that spooked investors today, a less optimistic outlook for the Chinese economy. The Conference Board`s leading economic index for China in April was revised down today to show a lower month to month gain for March. HUDSON: Here`s what the Conference Board had to say about this lower revision today. One of its folks in Beijing said there`s no strong basis for assuming accelerating growth. Do you agree with that assessment when it comes to the China economy?

ULRICH: We actually agree with that. Growth in the Chinese economy will decelerate in the coming few quarters. As you know, in the first quarter this year, GDP growth was 11.9 percent. However, in the second half (ph) of the year, we`re expecting growth to slow down to about 9 percent. By any measure, growth is still robust, but we`re definitely seeing a decelerating trend.

HUDSON: We have seen that news hit Asian markets overnight. European stocks sold off today and clearly the additional worries about banks there. And then of course U.S. stocks and the S&P falling to a new 2010 low. So what is that sustained impact on global stocks?

ULRICH: Well, you know, the Chinese economy is becoming much more important in the global markets. China is already the third largest economy in the world. It is the single largest exporter and what`s happening in China is really affecting the rest of the world. So I think you will see this global sell-off is understandable. During the fasting month and festivities, including Hari Raya and Gawai Dayak, the couple earned between RM20,000 and RM30,000 per month.

Suhaimi, previously employed with the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation, is looking to expand his business premise at Jalan Sultan Tengah here with the RM40,000 worth of machinery he received from the Sarawak Agriculture Department last year.

As the proprietor of Pemborong Mangkab Enterprise, he works closely with the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) to sought food technology and SIRIM for halal certification in order to add value to his products.

OWNING a new car, just a few short years ago, was an ambition many people could never aspire to.

But things have changed and cars are now as cheap as they have ever been with the Malaysian-produced Savvy a prime example. It costs less than pounds 8,000, is quite stylish with a neat set of alloy wheels and a front end featuring deep bumpers with a neat light cluster, well equipped, reasonably lively and cheap to run. It also handles quite well.

The downside is that it does feel cheap, particularly the interior with its harsh plastic and unsupportive seats.

Raj blood banks to go online

To connect all the 83 blood banks in the state, through an online system, the health department has sent a demand of Rs1.66 crore to the finance department to be able to complete the project.

The following are some basic facts about Kyrgyzstan.

Agriculture is the country's leading economic sector and the main products include wheat, beet, corn and tabacco.
