High school football Jaguars e

WEST JORDAN 鈥?West Jordan quarterback Michael Moorehead wore the word "confidence" on his wristband during Friday night's game against Provo. To those watching in the stands, Moorehead and his teammates might as well have had the word in large letters on their jerseys.

Moorehead threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns to go with nearly 200 yards rushing and another three touchdowns to lead the Jaguars in a 49-17 rout of the Bulldogs. The young quarterback, filling in for injured senior Adam Boelter, overcame four interceptions on a night when both teams struggled with turnovers and penalties.

"I had high hopes to do well, but not this well," Moorehead said. "I couldn't have done it without my teammates."

Wide receiver Deshawn Perkins also enjoyed a big night for the Jaguars, amassing over 100 total yards to go with a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown. Credit also belongs to the Jaguar defense, which frustrated a talented Bulldog offense, to the tune of eight sacks and five turnovers.

"Mike Moorehead's a special player," West Jordan head coach Morgan said. "He's getting more confidence every time he plays. As a team our expectations are higher. They weren't happy with what we did last week (a 58-40 loss to East)."

The Jaguars opened the game in an explosive way, with two touchdowns in the first two minutes. Moorehead marched the team downfield in short chunks in their opening drive, ending with a toss to Corbin Sharp in the end zone. Perkins then picked off a pass from Provo quarterback Trevor Zibetti on the Bulldogs' third play, returning it for a touchdown and a quick 14-0 lead.

Provo's Lincoln Salmon hit a short field goal to put Provo on the board, 14-3, to open the second quarter. The Jaguars responded immediately with a long gain from Moorehead to Perkins, setting up Moorehead's 35-yard touchdown run.

The two teams would trade turnovers, sometimes on back to back plays, to run out the time on the half. Provo opened the second half with a flash. On their third play, Zibetti hit receiver Seth Rhineer on a slant pass, which Rhineer took 75 yards for a touchdown and a 21-10 margin.

Moorehead threw another touchdown pass, this time to Trevor Beck from eight yards out. Provo's next drive would stall near midfield and they were unable to convert a failed fake punt attempt.

After the teams traded interceptions on back-to-back plays for the second time in the game, Moorehead's feet became the story of the game. He put the game well out of reach when he reeled off touchdown runs of 80 and 22-yards, each time simply gashing through the gut of the defense on draw plays.

Fellow Jaguars sophomore Chinedu Ahanonu scored on a 55-yard run to up the score to 49-10 early in the fourth, at which point the rules dictated a non-stop clock. Provo would tack on a late score on a 91-yard kickoff return by Keoki Unufe, who starred for the Bulldogs on offense as well.
